Extract DNA from a Strawberry

The following experiment will show you how to pull the DNA out of a strawberry.

To do this experiment, you will need...

1 Strawberry w/o leafy top (hull)
2 tsp Dish detergent
1/2 tsp Salt
1/4 c Water
8 oz Clear plastic cup
Rubbing alcohol (about a 1/4 c)
Coffee filter
Craft stick
Zip-top bag – sandwich size
Towel to clean hands

Optional: Magnifying glass, rubber band

Since ancient times every part of the strawberry plant has been used to improve health in some way!

The leaves of the wild strawberry plant have been used medicinally for centuries by many different cultures to help unpleasant issues such as diarrhea, liver disease, inflammation of the digestive tract and a few other things. 

Fresh strawberries are high in vitamin C, fiber, potassium, folate, and manganese and scientists are beginning to learn how they play an important role in fighting some types of cancer.

If you crush up the red flesh of a strawberry you can smear it on your skin to sooth a sunburn or whiten teeth if you mix it with a 1/2 tsp of baking soda!

Strawberries are a very versatile fruit that can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways, one of those ways is as a delicious tea.

There are some very interesting ways to grow strawberry plants!

In addition to growing strawberries in a traditionally raised bed, they can be grown in towers, containers, in unusual planters, in a hanging planter, upside down, in soil or hydroponically. Talk about a versatile plant!

Strawberry plants can be purchased in garden stores and come in a variety of types, but if you're interested in starting your own plants, there are a couple of ways to start them from the strawberries you purchase in the store.
